Email Blast About 8th Grade Course Registration

Hello Parents/Guardians,

We are excited to announce that the portal will open to all 8th graders tomorrow, Tuesday March 7th.  Your child will be able to see the courses that they've been recommended for based on teacher recommendations and placement test scores.  The Saxe school counselors will be partnering with the NCHS school counselors this week to help your children select their electives.  Over the course of this month please review your child's course selections.  The portal will close and all courses will be final on April 1st, 2017.

If your child is unhappy with a course recommendation they are allowed to appeal the decision for reconsideration.  We will teach your children the appeal process this week.  All appeals are also due on April 1st, 2017.

Please speak directly to your child's school counselor if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Parent Email Regarding Parent/Student Orientation Night

Welcome back!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing break. This is a reminder that 8th grade orientation is Thursday, March 2nd at 7pm at the high school.

Please information below from the high school staff:

Thursday, March 2nd beginning at 7PM in the auditorium, you and your child will have the opportunity to learn more about programming at New Canaan High School.  Five 12 minute sessions have been set up to allow you and your child to visit a number of different instructional disciplines together. You may visit any of the particular academic subjects where a staff member will share information on course expectations. Do not feel that you need to see every subject, but rather focus on areas that you and your child have questions about.

We also hope you will spend at least 1 and perhaps 2 sessions visiting the many elective options in the halls and around the circular staircase and speaking with the teachers and students about these courses.

The NCHS school counselors are available outside the counseling suite to answer questions about schedules, graduation requirements and planning a balanced program of study that is appropriately demanding and maintains the ability for students to discover new interests and activities.

Email Blast About AP/Honors Placement Tests

Dear 8th Grade Families,

This is a reminder that on Thursday, January 12th (Snow Date Friday, January 13th) at 9:15am we will hosting a parent coffee in the Wagner Room at the high school to present and discuss the transition process. If you are unable to attend, the presentation will be recorded and uploaded to the 8th grade transition web site.

Also, on Friday, January 13th, you will be receiving an email containing Honors/AP testing information and signup link.

Below is important Honors/AP testing information from New Canaan High School department heads (Science: Christian Dockum, English: Evan Remley, and Social Studies: Robert Stevenson).

Dear Parents and Students:

In February students will have the opportunity to take  placement performance tasks for the following subjects: English, science, and social studies.  These tasks are designed to measure the readiness of students for advanced work in these subjects in 9th grade.  The scores  on these assessments are considered in combination with a student’s academic performance in relevant subjects, and standardized tests.

Who should sit for these placement tasks?  Although there is no strict formula for success in advanced classes, students considering this course of study should already exhibit the following traits:

  • Strong aptitude in the subject.

  • A proven track record of success.

  • Independent skills in reading and analysis.

  • Individual initiative and the ability to approach course work independently.

Important Note:  Students not recommended for advanced classes for 9th grade will be given many opportunities for advanced work in later grades through teacher recommendations, student appeals, and measures of readiness and growth.

Test: A.P. World History (February 1st)

You need: Several sharpened pencils with erasers, and pen.

(Note: there are no pencil sharpeners in the cafeteria)

Description: Timed test. Multiple choice, short answer.

You will be reading documents and using them to answer multiple choice and short answer questions. You will also write a thesis statement and incorporate into a paragraph.

How to prepare: Your day to day work in Social Studies and English will help you be prepared by teaching you how to analyze documents, write a thesis and a paragraph. The content is based on the general trends and big changes and events in US History.

Test: Honors English (February 6th )

You Need: Several sharpened pencils with erasers, blue or black len.

(Note: there are no pencil sharpeners in the cafeteria)

Description: Timed test. Short essay answers.

You will read a short story and then answer approximately 2-3 short-essay questions. You will need to compose thoughtful, clear essays and justify your answers through textual evidence and analysis.

How to prepare: You should know all of the fiction literary terms that you have learned in L.A., review reading strategies, and review how to structure a short essay response.

Test: Honors Science (Same test for Honors Earth Science, Biology & Honors Biology)

(February 14th)

You need: At least 2 sheets of lined paper, several sharpened pencils with erasers.

(Note: there are no pencils sharpeners in the cafeteria).

Description: Times test. Multiple choice.

The test is considered a reasoning test. That means you’ll be given information and data and have to figure out what it means and be able to answer questions based on the data. The test measures your ability to read and interpret scientific information presented in text, tables and graphs.

How to prepare: The units you do in science and math, particularly when you are asked to interpret a graph that models a real-world situation, are directly related to this test. Some of the content may be similar to the units you have studied in science but some of them will not be. That is okay, you do not have to know all of the science content to do well on this test.
