K-12 World Language

Welcome Bienvenidos Bienvenus Salvēte 欢迎!

The World Language Department strives to equip our students with the linguistic and critical thinking skills they need to succeed in a world of increasingly interconnected peoples. We believe the study of world languages and cultures increases global awareness and gives students the ability to understand and, empathize, and respond effectively to issues as they relate to working with people from different cultures and who speak a different language.

New Canaan Public Schools has an engaging K-12 World Language program. Our Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) program begins in kindergarten when students are introduced to the Spanish language. Our Spanish program is content based, which means students are introduced to this very rich and interesting language in a program that aligns with their social studies curriculum.

At the end of Grade 5, students are given the opportunity to continue their study of Spanish, or they may choose to study another language. Options include French, Mandarin, or Latin. The choice made in Grade 5 commits the student to study that language choice for the following three years.

At the end of grade 8, students are given the choice to study two languages simultaneously, continue their current language study, or study a different language. The grade 8 options include French, Mandarin or Latin.
